Conflict

It’s me, Anna Castleman from Massachusetts, there is now a conflict erupting in western Pennsylvania between the British and the French. You see, a young man by the name of George Washington from Virginia was sent to the Ohio River Valley to make the French move out to allow room for the British to set up another settlement for the overflowing Virginia colonists. We are experiencing the same overcrowding here. The overcrowding causes tension between the colonists. Washington decided to set up a fort inside the French territory, and it was a good thing he did because the French soon attacked. He surrendered to protect the lives of his troops. After a short time, they were released. I’m sure you’ve all heard about Washington and his troops by now; he has become very famous throughout the colonies. But do you know what Benjamin Franklin, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is doing now? He has this idea that the colonies should come together as “one government” to fight against the French. One representative from each colony met in Albany, New York. They discussed the war and what to do about it. No one seems to like the idea that Franklin presented. Frankly, I’m for his plan of a single government. I understand why people might be against it. The southern colonists aren’t directly affected by this conflict, but they should realize that one day they might need our help. People are worried about giving up the power of their colony. They need to see how much stronger we can be together. Everyday people in Massachusetts debate the pros and cons of various options. It consumes most of our conversations. I believe Ben Franklin has a great idea. If we come together we can win against the French, and gain more territory for expansion. Although I am concerned about going to war: will my family members have to go fight. But I try to look at the bright side of things. My family has made the trip from England, we are free to practice our own religion, and I’m blessed with a great, healthy family.

My Life

Hi, my name is Anna Castleman. I’m living in Massachusetts and I’m 35 years old. My grandparents brought my mother over from England, and I was born here. Now, I have my own family. My husband is a shipbuilder and works eighty hours a week. We have many kids: six girls and four boys. The children are very helpful with doing the daily chores such as making candles, cloth, and clothes. We are just living day to day right now because King William and Queen Mary are creating new laws that force the colonies to trade only with England. I don’t think this is fair to us. If we could sell our items, such as rum, to other countries we could make a lot more money. The only thing my family and many others can do is pray that God will make this better. We go to church all day every Sunday to pray for God’s guidance. Most of the neighbors that go to church with us have children that do not know how to read. My husband and I think reading and arithmetic are very important skills that will help our children as they grow. I am very happy my parents taught me. That is why I make time each day to teach our children. With Benjamin Franklin publishing a newspaper down in Philadelphia, my children need to know how to read so they understand what is happening around us. The sun has already set and I must go to sleep so that I am ready to get up early to work tomorrow.
